Do you Know the Types of Cracked Teeth?
A cracked tooth is not any old cracked tooth; there are various ways that it can be cracked as well as subsequent treatments. In most cases, cracked teeth are treated with a crown and the original tooth is saved. In some cases, however, saving the tooth is not possible. Let's take a look at some of the most common types of cracked teeth.

Oblique Cracks

There are two types of oblique cracks. The oblique supragingival (above the gumline) crack is a minor crack that does not go beneath the gum line. With this type of crack, you might experience a little tooth loss, but there is very little pain because the pulp of the tooth is not affected. In an oblique subgingival (below the gumline) crack, however, the crack does extend past the gum line. The tooth will remain attached to the roots, but it will need to be addressed by the dentist right away as it can be very painful. This type of crack typically requires a procedure called a crown lengthening and a subsequent crown.

Root Cracks

Root cracks are sometimes harder to determine because the damage occurs to the area of the tooth that you cannot see. When the damage is near the surface of the tooth, the crack is called an oblique root crack and a root canal might suffice for treatment, but most often removal of the tooth is necessary. The vertical root crack also occurs at the root and is very painful. The severity of this crack determines whether or not the tooth gets extracted or not.
