Putting a Dental Crown on a Tooth

Dental Crown Cartoon RenderingYou've just received the news, your cracked tooth needs a crown. We aren't talking making it a member of the royal family. We are talking about placing a protective cover on the tooth. This cover a hard material that is shaped like the tooth it is covering. The material may be a natural looking white material to match your teeth or it could be silver or gold. Unless you're a rap star, you probably will opt for a material to match the rest of your teeth.

In order to have a crown attached, the tooth it's going on will be have to be ground down a bit for the crown to fit. A clay-like material is placed in your mouth filling in the area where the crown will go. The clay-like material hardens and forms a mold for your new crown to be made from. A temporary crown is placed on the tooth and adhered to it while the new crown is made.

Your dentist will have the new crown made precisely to fit in your mouth exactly as the old tooth did. After removing the temporary crown, your dentist will fit the new crown in your mouth and have you bite done on it to ensure it is fitted perfectly. Once it is determined that the crown fits perfectly, your dentist will remove the crown, place an adhesive on it and put it back on the tooth. Presto! You have a perfect looking tooth, no more pain and can go about eating your favorite foods.
