More than Sugar: Beware of Acids Affect on your Teeth Too

Soda is Acidic and Damages Tooth EnamelLike most people, you probably watch your sugar consumption in order to preserve your oral health. While this is a necessary step to prevent excessive plaque buildup and tooth decay, another culprit that is often overlooked is acidic foods. Most drinks other than water, citrus fruits and many foods cause the enamel on your teeth to break down, making your teeth become extra sensitive.

How Teeth become Sensitive

The enamel of your teeth exists for more than just to make you look pretty; they also protect the underlying structure of your teeth. The dentin, which is directly beneath the enamel is a very sensitive part of your tooth and when exposed, can cause serious pain when eating or drinking anything hot or cold.

The Food and Drinks to Avoid for Healthy Teeth

Small amounts of acidic foods or drinks can usually be tolerated by your mouth, as long as your saliva production is normal and can wash away the acids before they cause any harm. When acidic food or drinks are consumed in large quantities, however, the damage occurs. The following items should be consumed in moderation:

•  Soda
•  Wine
•  Fruit juice
•  Excessive coffee and tea
•  Oranges, grapefruits and lemons
•  Tomatoes

If you consume these items, it is best done with a meal. This is the time that your saliva production is the highest, allowing the acids to be washed away rather than sitting on your teeth until the next time that you brush and floss. By carefully watching your diet as well as the timing of eating certain foods, you can limit the acid erosion that occurs on your teeth.
