Halloween Oral Health Tips

Let's face it - everyone loves candy. Big kids (also known as adults) and little kids (the real kids) all love candy. Parents, grandparents, and children know the Candy Holiday is quickly approaching - Halloween is nearly here! As a parent, you know your kids will come home with loads of candy from your friendly neighbors; but as the parent you also know all that the candy will cause tooth decay and cavities. What can you do to help your children enjoy the Halloween fun and still keep their teeth healthy and strong?

Brushing, Flossing, and Rinsing

It's important that the kids keep up their brushing and flossing regime, especially during Halloween. Keep and close eye to make sure they're brushing (fluoride toothpaste) and flossing three times daily at this time of added candy consumption. You can encourage extra flossing by picking up some disposable dental flossers and keeping them in plain sight! Offer your children kid-friendly fluoride rinses for an added boost to oral health.

Enforce Candy Limits

As a parent, teach your kids the importance of moderation. Once you explain that by only eating a few pieces a day their candy will last for weeks to come, you'll like find them in support of candy limits. You should also monitor super sticky candies - candy corn, caramels, gummies and the like ' saliva has difficulty washing these away.

Offer an Alternative to Candy

Sugar free gum is a great candy alternative. It helps in the prevention of cavities by counteracting sugars harmful effects ' the bacteria formation that causes the decay.
