Everyone knows that brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day is critical to the long-term health of your mouth. What lots of people don’t seem to realize is that there is another critical part to the long-term health of your teeth – professional dental cleanings.

Professional Dental Cleaning – Critical To Oral Health

When we brush and floss on a daily basis, we are sweeping away the large food particles and bacterial buildup that accumulate over the day. As time progresses food particles and bacteria will build up in the nooks and crannies of your mouth that your brushing and flossing doesn’t reach. If it has been a long time since you had a professional dental cleaning, there is a good chance that there is a decent amount of built up bacteria and tartar in the spots that your toothbrush has a hard time reaching.

When you come into our office to have a professional cleaning and examination, we work hard to remove every single bit of built-up plaque and tartar, giving your teeth a new lease on clean.

Tartar Removal is Difficult

Bacterial buildup in the mouth takes two main forms – plaque and tartar. Plaque and tartar are essentially two different stages of the same bacterial buildup. Both are made of the bacteria that live in your mouth. These bacteria feed on the food particles that are left over from your snacks and meals; they love sugars and acids. As they proliferate throughout the day, they form a mossy-feeling coating over your teeth, which is called plaque. Plaque can be brushed and flossed away as long as you catch it while it is still soft and pliable.

After being left on teeth for long enough, maybe because your toothbrush and floss can’t reach a particular area, the plaque will harden into a scaly substance known as tartar. Tartar is very difficult to remove, even with professional dental tools, making it almost impossible to remove with a toothbrush and floss. Both plaque and tartar can eat away at the outer surface of your tooth (enamel) and eventually can cause an infection within your tooth (cavity). Not only can this bacterial buildup effect your teeth, but it can also infect your gums in what is known as gum disease.

Gum disease is an issue that, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss, soft tissue loss, and even bone loss in your jaw. Gum disease is related to other general health issues like stroke, diabetes, and heart issues.
