Chewing Gum: An Easy Way to Fight Tooth Decay

Woman putting chewing gum in her mouth - dentist marietta gaDid you know that by chewing sugarless gum for at least 20 minutes after every meal can significantly cut down your risk of tooth decay? When you chew gum, it increases the production of saliva in your mouth, which is what is needed to wash away the particles of food left in your teeth. This helps to decrease the risk of acids breaking down the enamel of your teeth from the bacteria in your mouth. In addition, saliva has vital nutrients in it, including calcium and phosphate, which are essential to strengthen the enamel of your teeth, helping you to fight tooth decay.

Choose your Gum Wisely for Fighting Tooth Decay

Not all chewing gum is created equal. When you are looking for the perfect variety, only choose among those that contain the ADA seal of approval. These choices go through rigorous testing by the scientists of the ADA to ensure their effectiveness in decreasing cavities. All of these gum products are sugarless and typically contain the ingredient, Xylitol, which is known to help fight against cavities.

Do Not Forget to Brush for your Dental Health

Chewing gum after every meal should not be used as a replacement for brushing your teeth at least twice per day. If you have the opportunity to brush your teeth right after eating, you should choose that over chewing gum, but for those times that brushing is not possible or convenient, gum can stand in its place temporarily.
