Removing those Pesky Tetracycline Stains

Posted on 1/25/2016 by Fady Ebid
A stethoscope with a large amount of colorful letters below it spelling out tetracycline. Were you prescribed tetracycline to treat an infection as a child? If so, you may be living with the side effects, which can include gray colored teeth. The stains that are caused by tetracycline penetrate deep into the enamel and into the dentin found below the enamel.

An experienced dentist will be needed to reduce the appearance and to restore the teeth to their natural color. Fortunately, several treatment options can be used, and your dentist can help you to choose the right one.

Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are often the best option for the treatment of tetracycline stains. These thin porcelain shells are shaped and colored to feel and look just like the natural teeth. The gray stains will not show through the veneers because the porcelain will only show a white, bright tooth. Porcelain veneers can also treat other dental problems, including gaps, crooked teeth, worn teeth, and uneven teeth.

Dental Bonding

Bonding can be used to treat problems with the teeth involving discoloration or chips. It involves applying a composite resin to the surface of the tooth in order to improve the appearance. The stains could show through slightly if they are deep, but bonding is an excellent option for stains that haven't penetrated into the dentine.

Tooth Whitening

Tooth whitening systems might not reduce or remove the appearance of tetracycline stains since they are found deep within the tooth. However, if the stains are found closer to the surface, they may be brightened with at home or in-office whitening systems. These remedies will work better than at-home kits but may require several treatments before the teeth return to their normal color.

If you are unhappy with the coloration of your teeth and want to discuss treatment options, contact our office today to discuss whether whitening, bonding, or veneers might be options for you.
