Are At-Home Teeth Whitening Kits More Effective than In-Office Treatments?

Posted on 9/10/2015 by Fady Ebid
A patients teeth before and after using a teeth whitening kit.Teeth whitening ritual basically follows a simple agenda, which is to get the stains out of the teeth to make them look shiny white. However, the execution procedure followed by a dentist to achieve this goal will be different from the DIY kits.

DIY Vs Dentist

DIY kits that are available today offer varied procedures and methods, such as trays, which have to be kept on for a few hours or overnight; whitening rinses; toothpastes or strips.

On the other hand your dentist first cleans the teeth before starting the whitening treatment. Then they use ingredients on the teeth that are activated by a laser light. The desired whitening results at your dentist may not involve just bleaching your teeth at a single sitting, and may also require several sittings depending upon the condition of the teeth.

While most people prefer to whiten their teeth at home, it might not have the desired results or might take a repeated use to achieve a professional look. Of course, at-home whitening kits are cheaper and you can do it comfortably in your own house, keep in mind that getting it done professionally is safer for your teeth.

The main difference between at-home kits and dentists' treatments is that the latter is carefully monitored so that the health of your teeth takes priority. Sometimes your dentist might call you in for more than one sitting and will also give you whitening trays that you can use at home. These trays are custom designed to fit your teeth, however, in a DIY kit, the trays will not come with a perfect fit. The bad fit might cause the tray to slip or not get the gel onto the teeth properly. Also, if the tray does not fit well, it might cause discomfort which might force you to remove the tray sooner than is recommended.

Considering all the points it can be safe to conclude that even if the DIY kits available in the market today seem cheaper, it is better to get it done professionally; or buy a dentist recommended kit to keep your teeth healthier.
