The Many Types of Teeth Whiteners

Posted on 5/3/2015 by Fady Ebid

A before and after picture of a woman's smile using a teeth whitening kit. Having a beautiful white smile is highly valued and it's one of the first things that people tend to notice about others. However, keeping your white smile is not easy. There are several things that cause a smile to fade such as drinking coffee, wine, or eating high sugar and carb foods.

Products like these have the potential to stain or discolor your teeth. Many people have learned that using whitener products helps to reverse the staining and discoloration. Teeth whiteners were created to help keep your smile bright.

The list of teeth whitening products is endless. There are several brands marketed that have similar, if not exact ingredients to serve the same purpose of whitening your teeth.

Although the list of products is endless, most, if not all fall into one of these categories.

Professional: Professional, or in-office, whitening is the easiest option because not only is a licensed professional doing the bleaching, but you are not having to put in any effort to have it done. The only downfall is that to achieve the best results several appointments will be needed. Even though this might be the easiest option, it is the most expensive one.

Rinses: Mouthwash has become a regular part of the brushing and flossing routine. It can help to keep your breath fresh while also reducing the chances of gum disease and the buildup of plaque. Hydrogen peroxide is the whitening agent that can be found in many mouth rinses or mouthwash. The results of the mouthwash compared to other whitening ways do not seem to compare. Using mouthwash only takes about a minute before each brushing, whereas other whitening products must be left on longer giving more time for the whitening solution to settle in.

Tray Based: Many pharmacies and big named stores that carry over the counter, or OTC, medications will also carry tray based teeth whitener systems. You can also purchase these from your regular dentist. The system involves filling a tray, which is similar to a mouth guard, with the whitening solution. This solution is normally in gel form.

OTC Gels and Strips: OTC gels are normally applied directly on the teeth with a small gentle brush. Strips are clear which gives off the feeling of not being seen or invisible. The gel is included with the strips. Once you have lined the strip with gel, you take the strip and place it directly onto your teeth making sure there are no pockets. Results can be seen in as little as a few days of using strips. When purchasing these OTC whitener kits be sure to follow the directions accordingly.

Toothpaste: The best thing about toothpaste is that it does a number of things to help prevent plaque buildup and keep teeth healthy. Certain brands market specialized toothpaste to help combat certain situations such as sensitivity or cavity control. Some brands even have the toothpaste labeled “Whitener.” If your teeth are sensitive or have other underlying issues, your dentist can recommend the best type of toothpaste to use for your teeth.

Some of these options are cheaper than others, but will not produce the same results. Using more than one of these methods can produce faster results. However, it is ideal to speak with your dentist or a dental professional regarding which ways are ideal for your situation.

Be sure to keep an eye out on the instructions for each product that you purchase over the counter. Many products have different instructions. When the instructions are not followed, it can result in the loss of money and potentially cause damage to your teeth.
